The multimedia project "100 min 100 år" visualises Finland’s 100-year history

This spring students of Media Culture at Arcada University of Applied Sciences are working on the comprehensive multimedia project 100 min 100 år (100 minutes 100 years). The project is part of Finland’s official “100 Programme”, and highlights the country’s 100-year celebration.

The students are producing a collection of short movies visualising how they see our 100-year old country today.

“The movies touch on different themes, such as bullying, sexuality, friendship and alienation, and how they all are part of life. Sure, these themes are often covered in films, but the interesting thing is to see how the students choose to tell about them,” says Robert Nordström, senior lecturer in media culture and the project’s initiator.

The students also produce podcasts and video blogs on the themes covered in the films. The pods are made as interviews and focuses on discussions. The vlogs give a glimpse of everything that goes on behind the curtains during the project.

“Since many formats are used within this project – films, pods, vlogs – it creates a strong correlation between all the material, and the project is given added value as a whole,” Robert says.

The project is a collaboration between all the fields of study within Media Culture.

“From a student’s perspective this project has been very rewarding, but also challenging. This is one of the largest co-operation projects ever undertaken within Media Culture. I am responsible for our social media, which means that I’m always working, since the media certainly is,” says Emilia Leino , student of Online Media.

“I’ve been positively surprised by how huge this project has become. It’s great fun that all the different parts of Media Culture are co-operating, and it shows how all the different roles and tasks are important for a production to take shape,” Robert continues.

The production gets visibiltiy through the project’s own Facebook and Instagram accounts, 100 minuter 100 år and 100min_100ar.

“The best thing about this project is that it feels real, especially after we became a part of the Finland 100 Programme. It gives new perspectives on the working life that’s waiting for us after our studies,” Emilia says.

The theme for Finland’s 100-year celebration is “Together”, which is reflected also within 100 min 100 år. Both the celebration and the Media Culture students’ project examine the contemporary Finland and create something new together.

If you want to follow the production’s progress and find out what it entails to work with short films and social media, make sure to tag along for this adventure! On the webpage 100min100ar.fi you find links to all social media and that’s also where all the short movies will be published on 30 May 2017.
