Arcada awarded €500,000 to further develop trustworthy AI

Published: 08.12.2022 / Research

The Ministry of Education and Culture has granted ten universities of applied sciences in Finland a total of EUR 5 million in state funding for research, development and innovation. Arcada is awarded 500,000 euro to continue developing its strategic focus on trustworthy AI (artificial intelligence).

AI has an increasing impact on societal functions such as democracy, peace and citizen health, not least from the perspective of creating new opportunities for the society. At the same time, there are ethical challenges in AI, highlighted by the European Union Commission and Parliament, the United Nations, and the World Economic Forum, who advocate for a sustainable and ethical use of AI in society.

Arcada's Laboratory for Trustworthy AI, with principal lecturer Magnus Westerlund as primus motor, has been founded to address these challenges. As one of the first research groups in the world in this field, the lab contributes to a successful and holistic approach to evaluating how the trustworthy and sustainable development of AI can be ensured. Here, the ethical and philosophical values and positions are identified as the most important aspects within the assessment process of reliable AI. The assessment process is carried out through the Z-Inspection® method External link, a well-known method for assessing trustworthy AI.

"This grant allows us to continue our long-term work to reduce or prevent unintended consequences of AI solutions, by examining the possible impacts from many different angles at an early stage", says Dean Henrika Franck.

The Laboratory for Trustworthy AI at Arcada is a transdisciplinary and international research community who trains organisations and actors to assess the use of artificial intelligence. The lab connects academia and civil society, including developers of AI solutions, students, end-users, researchers, and stakeholders.
