Service

The prime task of Arcada's library is to provide services for the students and staff of Arcada. In addition, it works as a library open to the public.

In order to borrow books from Arcada's library you need a library card. To obtain a library card you have to fill in an application form and show an identification card. The library card must be presented every time a loan or renewal is made.

The owner of the library card is always responsible for items borrowed with the library card. Borrowed items may not be passed on to other persons. Any changes of name, e-mail or address should be reported to the library. Loss of the library card must be reported to the library immediately. A fee of 5 euros is charged for a new card.

Any changes of name, e-mail or address should be reported to the library.

Loan period

The loan period is 14 days.

Reading room copies can only be borrowed by students and staff at Arcada, according to the following rules:

  • overnight loans from 3 p.m. until 11 a.m. on the following workday
  • weekend loans from Friday 2 p.m. until 11 a.m. on the following workday.

Reading room copies can be reserved only one day at a time.

Teaching and research staff at Arcada have a loan period of one year for monographs. These loans can be recalled after 14 days if there is a reservation made.

Reference books, degree theses, journals and newspapers cannot be borrowed.

Renewal of loans and personal information data

Renew your loans by logging in to the library catalogue Arken. Renewals can also be made by e-mail or in the library at the information desk, by calling.

You are not allowed to renew your loan if:

  • the book is requested by another person
  • the book has already been renewed 20 times
  • you owe more than 10 euros in fees or fines
  • your library card has expired.

Overdue material

Borrowed material must be returned on the due date. Overdue fines are charged starting from the first day following the due date. The overdue fine for an ordinary loan is 0.20 €/book/day and for a reading room copy 1.00 €/hour starting from 11 a.m.

The borrower is always responsible to be aware of the due date. A reminder of due loans is sent by e-mail two days before the due date.

A recall of overdue loans is sent the first workday after the due date, and after that another four recalls are sent. Recalls are sent by e-mail. Patrons that have overdue fees 10 € or more are blocked from loans and reservation until the whole amount of the overdue fees are paid.

Box for returned books

When the library is closed, books can be returned in the box outside the library’s main entrance.

Reservation and Arrival Notices

Reservations can be made on items that are on loan. You can make reservations yourself  by logging in to the library catalogue Arken. Reservations are also made by the library staff, and can be made at the library, by e-mail or by phone. You will get an arrival notice by e-mail when your reserved items have arrived in the library. The reserved items are kept in the library for three workdays.

Replacement of damaged or lost library material

Lost or damaged library material has to be replaced by a new copy or by paying a fixed fee. Annotations or underlining in the borrowed books will be regarded as damage.

Borrowing Data Records

Access to information in the register of users is available only to the library staff for official purposes. Under the Registers of Persons Act (532/1999), users have the right to inspect and correct their own personal data.

Information on individuals' orders, reservations of material, and loans, is confidential. All information concerning loans is deleted once the borrowed items have been returned.
