Why does Arcada have a fundraising campaign?

According to the new University Act, institutions of higher education will be responsible for a higher percentage of their own funding. Arcada wants to assume this responsibility from the outset. However, realising Arcada's vision to become a more innovative, dynamic and international institution of higher education will require significant investments.

The number of students will increase, which will lead to a need for more facilities. In 2011 construction will begin on two universal-access student housing flats and the year after that will see an expansion of Arcada's operational facilities.

You can support Arcada by making a donation. Arcada has three funds, each with a specific goal, for which donations can be made. By choosing one of these funds, you can decide how your donation will be used. For more information on funds, see the column at left.

Intellectual capital has value

Today's youth will be tomorrow's leaders. They are the ones who will create new, meaningful ideas and solutions, establishing businesses, steering social development and taking care of those who need care. However, in order for today's youth to be properly prepared for the workplace and make wise decisions that advance society and business, they need a high-quality education as a foundation.

Arcada's goal and mandate

The goal of Arcada is to ensure Finland's bilingualism by offering a Swedish-language education that is attractive to the labour market. It is also important that we secure the availability of Swedish-speaking labour, especially within fields that have a major impact on the needs and rights of the Swedish-speaking population in Finland. Furthermore, we strive to educate innovative, critical and ambitious experts, who will be beneficial to business and sustainable social development.

In order to achieve this goal, we will focus on a select number of competence areas, which are: 1. Sustainable materials and energy systems; 2. Digital services; 3. Health promotion, social involvement and patient safety; 4. Enterprise and strategic leadership; and 5. Sustainable development. We will also actively work across language lines. Understanding for an international environment and active co-operation with foreign institutes of higher education and universities are the prerequisites for our work. We look at the Nordic countries as our home market, and we seek growth both in Finland and abroad.

Arcada's ambitious vision for 2015 is to be:

• one of the three most international universities of applied sciences in Finland, in terms of the number of students and teachers as well as in research and teaching co-operation
