Nursing - Swedish programme

The aim is to educate registered Swedish-speaking nurses, public health nurses and midwives to assume professional responsibilities working close to the patient. They have good communication skills and are able to take part in developing healthcare in our country.

The Degree Programme in Nursing has a curriculum based on caring science but with strong multidisciplinary influences from the natural sciences (medicine), social sciences and behavioural sciences. The education is evidence-based.

The student gains the theoretical, practical and personal knowledge and skills that are required to meet and take care of persons of different ages and in different care situations who are in need of attention.

The ethical code, caring values, and relevant laws and regulations form the framework for the practice of the nurse, the public health nurse and the midwife.

Nursing competences

Caring competence

Caring competence is based on caring science and its values. It is the most central and unique competence for the professional nurse in meeting the patient in health promoting, preventative, clinical and rehabilitative care. The competence is needed in somatic and mental health and nursing care.

Medical-technological competence

Medical-technological competence involves the ability to understand what disease means and how it effects the individual. It shows itself in an ability to responsibly analyze, interpret and use knowledge from medicine and the natural sciences in the nursing process. It includes, among other things, medical calculation and administration.

Pedagogical competence

Pedagogical competence is needed for learning and is of central importance in supervising, teaching and guiding the patient, the relatives, students and personnel.

Scientific competence

Scientific competence involves the ability to identify developmental needs in caring, to actively and systematically look for evidence-based knowledge to initiate or contribute to the development of  caring and nursing.

Leadership competence

Leadership competence involves the ability to systematically plan ones own work and actively take part in decision-making processes. Leadership also requires the ability to work in multiprofessional teams and to lead different groups in the provision of care.

Public health nurse competence

includes nursing competence, but also requires a deeper knowledge and skills in health promotion and preventative care for people of all ages, families and different groups in their living surroundings.

Midwifery competence

includes nursing competence, but also requires a deeper knowledge and skills in sexual and reproductive health care and gynaecological care.  The competence includes the ability to take care of a woman during the course of normal pregnancy and delivery.
